Arnold Freight Company has been delivering freight and vehicle transport to Mackinac Island and surrounding areas for over 100 years. As a leader in Great Lakes marine logistics, we operate a fleet of commercial vessels year-round weather permitting, ensuring reliable service and safe passage for essential goods.

We are hiring a qualified USCG Licensed Captain to lead vessel operations between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. If you have maritime leadership experience and a passion for safe, efficient vessel operation, we invite you to join our team.

Responsibilities

  • Operate company vessels safely and in full compliance with USCG regulations (Subchapter T)
  • Navigate and dock vessels in a range of weather conditions
  • Supervise deck crew and ensure safety procedures are followed
  • Manage cargo loading/unloading and vessel documentation
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch and port staff
  • Conduct safety drills, inspections, and support vessel maintenance planning
  • Represent Arnold Freight in interactions with regulatory agencies and the public

Requirements

  • Valid USCG Master License (100 GT or higher preferred)
  • Valid TWIC card
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as captain or mate on commercial vessels
  • Proficiency in Great Lakes navigation and VHF communication
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in outdoor weather conditions
  • Willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Must pass a pre-employment & random DOT drug tests

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating under Subchapter T or K
  • Familiarity with tug, barge, or ferry operations
  • Mechanical knowledge or troubleshooting skills
  • CPR/First Aid certification
